Many people, at all levels in an organisation, have found that they have had to develop their leadership skills “on the job”, sometimes this works but often this inhibits people fully realising their individual and team’s potential. We have developed a programme specifically for people who operate in a “leadership” role and have therefore developed basic skills but who now need to “step up a gear”.
Knowing how to provide effective leadership is a matter of some confusion to many people. Every successful politician, business supremo or military general publishes his or her book on “how to do it”. Theorists too provide their insights into the Holy Grail yet they all seem to say something different.
We also have our views. We believe that whilst there are some guiding principles that give direction to the actions of effective leaders, people have to develop their own style and build their confidence in being a leader if they are to succeed in the work place. We have yet to meet anybody who was unable to lead others. We have worked with many people who needed to step back and reflect on their strengths and weaknesses and build their skills and confidence.
On our courses, delegates have the opportunity to build on their experiences, identify where their talents lie and develop their skills. This process is supported by gaining understanding from feedback, theory inputs and most importantly learning from leading a group of people through a series of projects.
Most of these projects are outdoors, but this is not a test of strength or fitness. Each task is designed to highlight different aspects of the leadership role and give participants understanding and practice. Failure to achieve a successful outcome can provide enormous learning provided understanding is achieved. We believe that making the experience enjoyable and memorable assures long-lasting learning.
